An engine oil additive package, often called a DI (detergent-inhibitor) package, is the concentrated blend of chemistry that turns base oil into finished engine oil, dosed at a defined treat rate to deliver detergency, dispersancy, wear protection, oxidation control and acid neutralisation from a single balanced product. It’s what determines the API, ACEA or JASO performance level the finished oil can claim.

What an engine oil additive package does
A finished engine oil is mostly base oil, which does almost none of the protective work; the additive package carries that load, in six families of chemistry that each handle a specific job inside a running engine:
- Detergents protect hot metal surfaces, such as piston rings, ring grooves and the valve trains from acidification.
- Dispersants hold soot and contaminants in suspension so they cannot clump into sludge.
- Antioxidants slow the oil's oxidation under heat, limiting breakdown of the oil and extending drain life.
- Anti-wear agents form a protective film on cams, tappets and bearings under boundary-lubrication conditions.
- Friction modifiers cut friction in places where it costs fuel economy.
- Corrosion inhibitors and overbased detergents neutralise acidic combustion by-products (this is what TBN measures) and shield bearing metals from acid attack.
Getting these six families to work together in the right ratios, without one undermining another, is the hard part of formulation. A DI package solves that in advance: the blender adds base oil and a viscosity modifier to a proven package and gets a finished oil that performs to a known specification, batch after batch.
