Petrochemical Industry in Pakistan

The petrochemical industry in Pakistan is experiencing a strong rebound owing to a series of healthy investments and developments that are simultaneously taking place in sectors of transportation, gas exploration, and production. Above all, the growing demand for petrochemical supplies around the world has become a huge window of opportunities for Pakistan to push its petrochemical products, and gain greater market share in small and developing nations. Like the rest of the world, the petrochemical industry in Pakistan is rapidly adopting modern innovations and technologies to ramp up production activities. Not to mention, Pakistan is heavily focusing on garnering oil and gas pipeline assignments to sustain productivity and position. Government-owned entities, as well as public sector companies, are adopting newer business strategies and models that are assisting in trimming upstream oil and gas operations and drive market growth.

Petrochemical products

The petrochemical industry in Pakistan is well-known for producing three types of polymers: General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS), High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), and Expandable Polystyrene (EPS.)

Overview

GPPS is produced by polymerizing styrene monomer. It is a solid product (transparent) that gets manufactured in pellet form. The sizes range between 2mm and 5mm. GPPS is widely used in the manufacturing of food containers, office stationery supplies, toys, household appliances, electrical devices, hangers, egg boxes, disposables, cutlery wares, vending items, IT equipment, cosmetic boxes, etc.

HIPS is primarily made of Butadiene (rubber) and is used to make articles that demand high degree resistance and glossy sheen and finishing. HIPS is well-suited for manufacturing appliances such as refrigerators, food cups and trays, sheets and laminations, automotive components, medical devices and peripherals, cutlery items, gasoline tanks, computer equipment, and instrument panels and fittings.

EPS is polystyrene that contains Pantene (a blowing ingredient) and is bead-shaped. EPS possesses certain traits that underline its usefulness and versatility. It offers high thermal insulation, high resistance, and is process-friendly. As a result, EPS is the preferred material that gets used in the manufacturing of packaging items, insulation panels, and blocks, food boxes, drinking cups, ice boxes, pipe insulations, etc. Also, a customized version of EPS grade is available; it is equipped with Flame Retardant (FR) qualities and is tailor-made for the insulation industry.

Health safety and Environment

Some occupational hazards that are commonplace in the petrochemical industry in Pakistan include process hazards (leaks, spills, metal fatigue, corrosion, equipment malfunctions, etc), fire and explosions, oxygen-deficient atmosphere, chemical hazards (chemical discharge), noise, etc. The companies operating in the petrochemical industry in Pakistan have implemented an array of strict protocols for the protection and preservation of the health and safety of manpower and resources. Below is an overview of some of the mainstay policies that have been designed and enacted to govern the upkeep of health, safety, and the environment.

Overview

A lot of planning research precedes the policy-making on health and safety matters – of manpower and environment. The petrochemical industry in Pakistan has adopted the following strategic measures to ensure that all resources are safe and well looked after.

  • On-site checks and facility studies and analyses; use of Hazard Identification Study (HAZID), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), et al.
  • Shutdown of all operations owing to the occurrence of an untoward activity; use of safety equipment and evacuation management protocols.
  • Installation of safety equipment (warning systems, pressure indicators, heat and smoke detectors, etc); availability of emergency medical treatments.
  • Inspection of mechanical and process equipment; ensuring that onsite practices are not violating health and safety, and environment-related protocols.
  • Timely organization of safety training drills.
