What a gear oil additive package does
Gears transmit power through metal surfaces pressed together under enormous local pressure. Where the oil film gets squeezed thin, at the tooth contact of a heavily loaded gear, the surfaces can momentarily weld and tear, a failure known as scuffing or scoring. Base oil alone cannot stop this; the extreme-pressure additives in the package can.
The way EP chemistry works is fairly elegant: under the heat and pressure of gear contact, the sulfur-phosphorus additives react with the metal to form a thin sacrificial film that shears instead of the metal, then continuously reforms as the gears turn, so the gear faces stay intact. Alongside this, the package’s antioxidants keep the oil from thickening, and its corrosion inhibitors protect against rust and acid from moisture ingress.
Working from a package rather than separate additives means the hard part, getting the EP, anti-wear and inhibitor ratios right and confirming they are compatible, is already done. A blender gets a finished gear oil with consistent, predictable performance, batch after batch.
Choosing Between GL-4 and GL-5 Gear Oil Additive Packages
This is the first question a gear oil buyer asks, and getting it right is not optional. The difference between the two grades comes down to the amount and activity of the EP additive: a GL-5 oil carries roughly twice the EP additive of a GL-4, which is what protects hypoid axle gears under high-speed, shock-load conditions.
More EP additive is not simply “better,” though. The active sulfur in a full GL-5 additive system will chemically attack the brass and bronze synchronizers used in many manual transmissions, causing gradual wear and eventually rough shifting. That is why a GL-5 oil should never be substituted where a GL-4 is specified. The two grades are built for different jobs:
GL-4
spur and helical gears in manual transmissions and transaxles, where yellow-metal synchronizers need a milder, compatible EP level.
GL-5
hypoid gears in automotive axles and differentials, where high-speed and shock loads demand maximum EP film strength.
